AT THE WILDLIFE PARK

We have a marvellous mob of four Meerkats at the park, including Jackie, our dominant female, who can often be seen squabbling with the others at feed time!
Our playful cheeky Meerkats share their large desert style enclosure with our Bat Eared Fox!

Come & say hi to our marvellous Meerkats during a Meerkat talk every day at 12.00 & 15.30 (15.30pm talk available only April-October)

HABITAT

Meerkats are found in southern Africa living in dry open areas, scrublands and savannas. They inhabit all parts of the Kalahari desert and parts of the Namib desert.

WILD DIET

Meerkats are primarily insectivores, but also eat plants and other animals such as lizards, snakes, scorpions, spiders, eggs, small mammals & small birds.

BEHAVIOUR & BREEDING

The alpha male & female do most of the breeding from October to April. They have a gestation period of 11 weeks and will have 2 – 5 pups. Adult members of the mob help to babysit and mentor the young so that the mother can forage for food.

THREATS & CONSERVATION

Meerkats face no major treats in the wild and numbers are believed to be stable. The natural predators to them are snakes & birds of prey.

FUN & INTERESTING FACTS

Meerkats have developed their own language! They are thought to have over 40 sounds that mean different things, from recruitment calls to danger warnings.
