Dromaius novaehollandiae (Common Emu)

Emus are the largest bird native to Australia and belong to a group of flightless birds known as ratites. This soft feathered bird can travel great distances and if necessary can reach speeds up to 31 mph.
Emus use their clawed feet as a defence mechanism and their legs are among the strongest of any animal, they are the only birds with muscles at the back of their lower legs. If they need to defend themselves they can strike and rip with their heavy feet and nails with a powerful forward kick. They have good eyesight and hearing which can detect nearby predators.
It is believed that the Emu is a survivor of prehistoric times and some scientists consider them to be living Dinosaurs because their bones and joints are similar.
